All co-ops need community involvement.

We depend on our owners as well as our shoppers for financial success and stability. As an owner, you help to bring the focus on better food for your family and create a place where healthy and affordable food is accessible to all.

The benefits far outweigh the cost.

Ownership costs just $200 per share, and can also be paid through monthly payments of $25 a month over 8 months. We re-circulate money in our local economy by purchasing from local farmers and producers, supporting locally made products, and creating better quality jobs– when you purchase an ownership share, you support these values.

As an owner, you are also eligible to receive a percentage of co-op store profit at the end of each year. There are many benefits to ownership in the co-op.

Benefits of Ownership:

  • Monthly Specials/Discounts for Owners
  • Coupon Books Mailed to You
  • Bi-monthly Co-op newsletter with an Owner Coupon
  • Percentage of Store Profits Distributed to Owners
  • A Vote- You Elect the Board of Directors
  • Invitations to special events
  • Discount on Friendly City Food Co-op Classes

When you become an owner, you become part of a greater whole.

Currently, we have over 1,600 member owner households. As an owner, you purchase a share of stock in the cooperative. This gives you governance rights, including the right to vote in Board of Directors elections and the right to run for a seat on the Board. The store is run by a professional staff and overseen by the Board, which determines the goals and values of the co-op.

How do I join?

Virginia cooperative statues limit our ownership to residents of the Commonwealth of Virginia. You can find the agreement here. Fill it out and return it with your payment – either cash, check, debit, or credit card. The easiest way is to pick up a form at the register the next time you are in the co-op, so stop by and visit us soon!
